Best practices for using Attribuly Capture with Klaviyo emails

Written by Alex

When Attribuly Capture identifies and syncs anonymous visitors to Klaviyo, you can incorporate more high-intent visitors into your email and remarketing strategy. However, these contacts are not the same as users who have already subscribed to your newsletter via a form. Therefore, we recommend a more measured and clearly structured approach to your flow design and copywriting.

This guide outlines the default configuration we recommend for brands, with the goal of achieving three things at once:

  • Maximize the conversion value of high-intent traffic.

  • Design opt-in prompts to guide anonymous visitors toward subscription, reducing the risk of complaints from those who receive emails without having explicitly subscribed.

  • Minimize disruption to your existing Klaviyo structure.

Concepts

  • Anonymously identified contacts: Visitors who are identified by Capture and synced to Klaviyo but have not explicitly subscribed to marketing emails via a subscription form, pop-up, or checkbox.

  • Subscribed contacts: Users who have completed a clear opt-in through the brand's own subscription entry points.

  • High-intent behavioral flows: Flows that are directly triggered by a user's recent on-site behavior, such as Product View, Add to Cart, and Checkout Started."

Core principles

1.Test

  1. Use only 'Add to Cart' as the trigger condition.

  2. Monitor the following metrics: open rate, click-through rate, and unsubscribe rate. The open and click-through rates should be no less than 50% of those from actively subscribed users, and the complaint rate should be below 0.3%.

2.Design the opt-in flow

After anonymous visitors are added to the 'Attribuly' segment, their status is 'never subscribed'

There are two ways for them to become subscribed users(In the list settings):

Opt-in methods

Flow

Advantages and disadvantages

Single opt-in

  1. Add to a list.

  2. The user subscribes by clicking the opt-in link.

A dedicated flow needs to be designed separately. This flow can drive conversions, and its conversion rate is generally only about 15% lower than that of the welcome flow.

Double opt-in

  1. Add to the list.

  2. Klaviyo sends a 'confirm subscribed' email.

  3. The anonymous visitor clicks to complete the subscription.

Email template options are more limited, making it difficult to drive conversions. The subscription rate is lower than with the single opt-in method.

However, no separate email template needs to be designed.

Import as historical subscribed users.

Contact us to handle it manually.

You can manually change the status to 'subscribed' directly in Klaviyo. However, since the user did not actually subscribe, the unsubscribe rate may increase.

Design a confirmation email

3.Trigger high-intent flows directly

We recommend that you adopt the following approach by default:

  • As long as a contact triggers a high-intent behavior (product view, add to cart, checkout), you can directly trigger using the events we send back.

  • The expected complaint rate is below 0.5%, so the risk is relatively low.

The reason is straightforward: users have just viewed a product, added it to their cart, or reached the checkout page. Receiving an email directly related to that behavior at this moment is unlikely to trigger complaints.

Single Opt-in template

Recommended trigger method:

Trigger:Added to List = attribuly

Recommended sending logic:

Do not send a welcome email immediately after a contact is added to the list. A more cautious approach is:

  1. Add a delay first — we recommend starting with 30–120 minutes.

  2. Before sending the first email, check whether the contact has triggered Product View, Add to Cart, or Checkout Started during that time period.

  3. If any of these have been triggered, exit the welcome flow directly.

  4. If none have been triggered, then send the anonymous welcome email.

Recommended content structure:

  1. Brand header: Logo + 3–4 core category navigation links.

  2. Subscription invitation section: A lightweight headline and a brief description of the value of subscribing, with a primary CTA such as 'SUBSCRIBE & KEEP EXPLORING' that links to a subscription confirmation page.

  3. Category recommendations: Show 6–8 core product categories in a two-column image card layout.

  4. Brand introduction section: Briefly describe the brand positioning, product advantages, and service philosophy, with an additional CTA to explore the brand.

  5. Opt-out option: Clearly include a 'Not Interested' or unsubscribe link to respect user choice.

  6. Trust signals and footer: Highlight shipping, returns, warranty, customer service, social media links, contact information, and compliance details.

The overall structure should follow: a light invitation → interest-based recommendations → brand endorsement → a clear choice. Avoid directly mentioning anonymous identification.

You can directly copy and modify it:

'Keep Exploring' links to the subscription page — a small but thoughtful touch.

Delivery rate and complaint control

We recommend the following as your default settings:

Phased scaling

In the first 2–4 weeks after enabling Capture-based email outreach, we do not recommend turning it on for all contacts at once.

A more cautious approach is:

  • First, allow only a portion of Attribuly contacts to enter the email flow.

  • Monitor spam complaints, open rates, click-through rates, and overall domain performance after going live.

  • Once performance is stable, gradually expand the coverage.

As soon as negative signals appear, suppress immediately

When the spam complaint rate over the past 30 days exceeds 0.3%, consider pausing and contacting us.
